exhibits and collaborations
Debut High School Visual Arts Exhibit and Competition.
Each spring, the Holland Friends of Art and the Holland Area Arts Council partner to present Début, the High School Juried Art Exhibition. By giving young people a significant experience in the arts we hope to instill in them both the joy and challenge art brings to our lives.
Area high schools take part in this exciting exhibition including Black River, Coopersville, Fennville, Grand Haven, Holland Christian, Holland, Jenison, Saugatuck, West Ottawa and Zeeland. Each art instructor may submit 16 works from their students. The Arts Council chooses a juror from the artistic community whose task is to choose 100 pieces for the exhibit. While this creates a tremendous amount of excitement around the show, it also injects the element of competition that exists in any juried exhibition.
Holland Friends of Art sponsors the awards.

Every year, the Holland Friends of Art and the Holland Area Arts Council collaborate for this All Michigan All Media Art Competition. Zeeland Hospital Gallery
Holland Friends of Art & Zeeland Community Hospital have collaborated on a project which is beneficial to all. People in a hospital situation often have a high anxiety level. Art has been shown to lower stress hormone levels and enhance the immune system. The ZCH has provided wall space for art to be hung while HFA has artists willing to exhibit their work. Art is on loan for a period of one year or length of time the artist chooses. A sign is attached to the wall containing our HFA logo, title of the piece, medium, artists’ name and how to contact the hospital for sales. All the main areas on three floors of the hospital, the gift shop, and the cafeteria in the attached De Witt Office Building have art from this project. All work must be of a high quality and appropriate for the hospital situation. The hospital Art Committee has the right to refuse artists’ work. A recent hospital survey of patients and their staff showed a very positive effect from this project. Paintings have sold and been removed from the hospital. Several have been donated to the hospital and a gold label has been attached to the piece with the donor’s name and if it was done in memory or honor of someone. You are invited to come into the Zeeland Hospital to see the art during regular hospital hours. There is no commission taken by the hospital for sales. If you are willing to participate, need more information, know of someone willing to donate work or money, please send us an email.
